Apprenticeships at Borders College

The Apprenticeship Family
Foundation Apprenticeships help young people gain valuable, real-world work experience and access work-based learning while they’re still at school and it’s a chance for them to get a head start on their careers by gaining an industry-recognised qualification, work on real projects and broaden their career options when they leave school.
For employers, it’s the chance to attract highly motivated and committed young people who are willing to learn, identify young people who are right for their business and ensure their organisation has people with the skills they need.

Modern Apprenticeships are work-based training opportunities for new or existing employees; supporting Scotland’s ambition to secure a trained, productive and enthusiastic workforce for the future. They offer the chance for individuals to work in paid jobs while undertaking workplace training to gain enhanced skills and recognised Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ). All apprentices need to be in employment throughout the duration of their programme. Modern apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 and over. Funding contributions towards the cost of training may be available, depending on age, sector and framework selected.
Each Apprentice must, during the period of their MA, fulfil the requirements of the legal right to work in the UK and be employed by an employer.

I am really enjoying my modern apprenticeship course. Being a busy mum doing my qualification allows me to continue working to provide for my children while at the same time my course fits around my job and my busy family life. All that I am learning through my modern apprenticeship is then used within my work setting which is developing my career further. My assessor Fiona is brilliant. She has been very understanding and incredibly supportive if I have gone to her with any struggles that I have had throughout my time working with her. She has allowed me to see my full potential and made sure I am working to that level throughout and I am very grateful to her for that."

The support from my assessor Elizabeth King, has been first rate. She is supportive and responsive helping me keep on track.
Doing an MA, has helped build my confidence in my abilities and encouraged me to find new knowledge.

A huge benefit I have had is having such a supportive assessor, Hannah Inglis. She has been such a great person to work with and has really helped me. I struggle with mental health a lot and quite badly. Hannah is always supportive and helps me with my work more than I could ask for, she will explain things to me more than once without getting annoyed about repeating herself. I really couldn’t thank her enough for making my SVQ as stress free as possible.

While working through this qualification, I have found it very useful that this is done online as I prefer to work from home so that I can concentrate. My assessor Hannah has been brilliant. She is very prompt with her replies to my emails and when marking work. I find it easy to approach her to ask for support or guidance. Hannah explains assignments in great detail during our Teams meetings, which I find useful as I like to sit and write notes while we talk. When I have any questions about course work, I find Hannah very approachable and knowledgeable.
I am finding the course enjoyable and looking forward to achieving my SVQ2 at the end of it.

Modern Apprenticeships offer an excellent opportunity to learn on the job, gain new qualifications and experience whilst working towards a qualification. As a mature student, the Modern Apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to undertake workplace training to enhance my skills and gain a recognised Scottish Vocational Qualification. I am very well supported by my assessor, which I feel is of paramount importance to me.I highly recommend this training.
