Lucie Shand never imagined running her own business until she took a Business Management class while studying Animal Care at Borders College. Inspired by the course, she turned her passion for animals into a thriving dog walking and training business, Fetch and Focus in the Borders.

The 28-year-old from Newtown St Boswells returned to college after eight years of working, seeking to expand her knowledge of animal care. As part of her studies, she created a business plan that received positive feedback from her lecturer, Susan Cooper. Encouraged by the support, Lucie refined her plan, did further research, and took the leap into entrepreneurship.

“I never thought going back to college would result in me owning my own business. The support was fantastic and made my dream a reality.”

Her time at Borders College provided her with essential skills, including deeper insights into dog training, animal health, and veterinary care. She enjoyed applying her knowledge to her own dog and was eager to broaden her expertise.

Lucie’s dedication and innovative business idea led her to enter Borders College’s Start-up Competition, where 11 students pitched their ventures to a panel of judges. To her surprise, she won.

“Winning completely shocked me. I didn’t think I presented well, but my passion spoke for itself. The judges were impressed."

The £700 prize helped her launch Fetch and Focus.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Gaining valuable skills and confidence is essential. If you have an idea, put it on paper and see what happens.”

Lucie’s story is proof that with the right support, passion, and perseverance, dreams can become reality.

Lucie was recently recognized at the ALBAS 2025, Lantra Scotland’s Awards for Land-based and Aquaculture Skills, for her exceptional dedication and achievements. She was awarded Runner-up in the Higher Education HND category.
