Schools Academy Celebrates Success

Business setting

Borders College’s Schools Academy has once again demonstrated its commitment to excellence, as reflected in the overwhelmingly positive feedback from students and staff for the academic year 2024-25. The latest feedback report highlights significant improvements in key areas, cementing the programme’s role in empowering young learners and fostering collaboration between schools and the college.

Student Satisfaction Reaches New Heights

A standout achievement of the Schools Academy this year is the rise in student satisfaction, which increased from 82% in 2023-24 to 84% in 2024-25. This upward trend reflects the college’s dedication to providing an engaging and supportive learning environment for secondary school students. Even more impressively, 99% of students reported that the program met their expectations—up from 93% last year.

Students also praised the Academy for inspiring them to pursue their ambitions. A remarkable 93% stated that the programme had motivated them to achieve their career goals, a 10% leap from the previous year. This motivation underscores the value of practical, hands-on learning combined with a welcoming atmosphere, which many students highlighted as a highlight of their experience.

Enhancing Independence and Building Friendships

The feedback report shines a light on the aspects students appreciated most about the Schools Academy. Many celebrated the sense of independence and freedom they gained, along with opportunities to make new friends. Students also noted the benefits of the Academy’s practical approach to education, the welcoming campus environment, and the sense of progression to a more advanced style of learning.

One student shared,

“I’ve really enjoyed myself here. I’ve met new people, and it’s given me a clearer idea of the direction I want my career to head.”

Another added,

“I felt like I’ve become more confident and relaxed when speaking to others.”

Transport and Communication Improvements

Transport satisfaction saw a notable increase, rising from 68% to 74%. This improvement reflects collaborative efforts between Scottish Borders Councils’ Passenger Transport Team and Borders College to address previous challenges and enhance the overall experience for students commuting to the campus.

Staff feedback also pointed to strengthened communication between schools and the college. This year, satisfaction with communication reached 72%, with several staff members praising the improved monthly tracking system and the reinstatement of school coordinator meetings. These developments have facilitated a smoother collaboration, ensuring students and staff are well-informed and supported.

A Strong Foundation for the Future

The Schools Academy’s Friday delivery model continues to be a resounding success, with 100% of surveyed staff agreeing that it works well. This format, combined with effective induction days, has provided students with a seamless transition into college life.

The strategic evaluation workshop held on November 6 reinforced the commitment to continuous improvement. Staff and school representatives agreed on actionable steps to address minor concerns, such as refining attendance tracking and enhancing clarity around learning support and key points of contact.

A Programme Transforming Lives

The Schools Academy is not just a bridge between secondary education and higher learning; it’s a transformative experience that equips young people with skills, confidence, and direction. From the practical elements of the courses to the relaxed and inclusive campus atmosphere, the Academy offers an invaluable glimpse into future opportunities.

This year, 52% of students expressed an intention to apply for a full-time college course next year, further highlighting the program’s effectiveness in inspiring long-term academic and career ambitions.

Commitment to Excellence in 2025-26

Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback, the decision to continue the Friday Schools Academy delivery into the 2025-26 academic year has been unanimously supported. Borders College remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering high-quality education and fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.

As one staff member aptly put it,

“The Schools Academy provides students with a sense of ownership over their learning and a unique opportunity to experience life on campus. It’s an invaluable partnership that truly makes a difference.”

With a proven track record of success and a clear vision for the future, the Borders College Schools Academy is poised to continue shaping the next generation of confident, motivated, and skilled learners.

Amy Brydon, Director of Student Support Services, commented:

“The Schools Academy programme is an important collaboration between Borders College and Scottish Borders Council. Crucially, it helps young people navigate the important steps from school to further education or employment.

"The dedication and hard work of the staff involved in delivering this programme has been instrumental in making it such a success, and the excellent partnership we enjoy with SBC and local high schools is what makes this initiative so effective.

"We are very proud of the programme and hope to see many of our Schools Academy students progressing on to full time courses at the College in the years to come."
