Lauren Shannon Wilson embarked on an inspiring journey of growth and learning through the Modern Apprentice programme, a collaboration between Borders College and Scottish Borders Council. The programme required her to balance hands-on placement experience four days a week, online tutorials, and one-on-one planning sessions with her college assessor.

Lauren entered this new chapter with little experience in childcare, transitioning from a very different background. However, her determination and strong work ethic stood out from the start. Guided by her assessor, Nicola Aitken, Lauren approached her SVQ Level 3 Social Services Children and Young People course with diligence and enthusiasm.

Nicola Aitken/ Lauren’s Tutor/Assessor said:

“Lauren was new to childcare when she started her SVQ, but she was determined and hardworking, which saw her progress well. She set aside regular time for her planned written work, used her experiences to create engaging activities for children, and brought valuable insights from her placement into her coursework. I wish her all the best in her career as a childcare practitioner.”

For Lauren, the programme was more than just a course; it was an opportunity to transform her aspirations into reality.

Reflecting on her journey, she said:

“I have really enjoyed my time studying to be an Early Years Practitioner. The combination of studying and working full-time in a nursery allowed me to gain invaluable experiences. I used these experiences in my written work, which made the process both meaningful and manageable.”

Lauren embraced the challenges of the course, which included researching various laws and professional guidelines. Initially daunting, she found immense support from her colleagues, her college assessor, and officers from Scottish Borders Council. Their guidance ensured she had the tools to succeed.

Throughout her journey, Lauren showcased creativity and positivity, turning her real-life experiences into written work that reflected her growth as a practitioner. With her new qualifications and hands-on experience, she now stands ready to shape young lives and inspire others through her work in early years education.

Lauren’s story is a testament to how hard work, support, and determination can pave the way to a fulfilling career.
