Greg to address Green Skills at Sustainabuild Event

Greg Steel Jan 2025

Borders College is proud to announce that Greg Steel, Head of Sector, STEM & Sustainable Construction, will be a featured speaker at the upcoming Sustainabuild event on 30 January in Glasgow. This pivotal event, hosted at The Social Hub, aims to tackle Scotland's green skills gap in the construction sector, a critical barrier to achieving the country's Net Zero commitments.

Greg has been a driving force in advancing sustainable construction education at Borders College. With a strong background in sustainability Greg will address the green skills gap at the Sustainabuild Event.

Greg will join a distinguished panel of speakers, including industry leaders and sustainability experts, to discuss actionable strategies for increasing the delivery of green skills in the construction sector. Topics will include the importance of reskilling and upskilling the current workforce, leveraging emerging technologies, and fostering collaboration between education providers, employers, and policymakers.

The event will feature remarks from Graeme Dey, Minister for Veterans and Minister for Higher and Further Education, who will open the Assembly with a call for collective action:

"To address the green building skills shortage, we must tackle the challenge from all angles to ensure that we harness the opportunities that the just transition to a green economy will unlock."

Highlighting the urgency of the challenge, a recent report by Turner & Townsend revealed that 56% of Scottish organisations are experiencing a worrying skills shortage, with the construction sector particularly impacted by a lack of skilled green workers.

Sustainabuild, in partnership with The Verdancy Group, seeks to bridge this gap through collaboration and knowledge-sharing. The event will feature key insights from Professor Robert Hairstans of Edinburgh Napier University, Steven Kiakowski, Director of The Verdancy Group, and other industry leaders, alongside Greg Steel.

Speaking ahead of the event, Steven Kiakowski remarked:

"Education and green skills are the foundation for delivering a sustainable future... We must accelerate our efforts to provide accessible, high-quality training that aligns with future industry ambitions."
