Borders College proudly hosted the British Army at its Scottish Borders Campus, providing an invaluable opportunity for attendees to learn more about military life, its roles, and its impact on local communities. The Army Engagement Event, designed to foster connections and share insights, allowed participants to gain firsthand knowledge about career paths within the British Army and the diverse opportunities it offers.

Among the highlights of the day was the return of former Borders College student, now British Army Corporal Megan Reid. Megan’s journey into the armed forces began at Borders College in 2006 when she enrolled in a ‘Preparation for the Army’ course. Inspired by her experience and the guidance she received, she made the life-changing decision to enlist. Upon completing her college studies, Megan successfully underwent training with the Royal Logistics Corps, setting her on a path to a dynamic and fulfilling military career.

Over the course of eight years in service, Megan not only excelled in her military duties but also developed a passion for boxing as a way to maintain physical fitness. Her dedication and perseverance led her to represent Scotland in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, a remarkable achievement showcasing her discipline and resilience in and out of uniform.

Now retired from competitive boxing, Megan remains actively involved in promoting careers within the British Army. She regularly participates in engagement events such as the one at Borders College, sharing her experiences and inspiring the next generation of potential recruits.

Reflecting on her time at Borders College and her journey into the military, Megan shared:

“I really enjoyed my time at Borders College, and it was certainly one of the key inspirations for becoming a full-time soldier. The ‘Preparation for the Army’ course was instrumental in shaping my career path, providing me with invaluable knowledge and confidence. During my time at college, we had numerous opportunities to engage with professional soldiers and gain insights into army careers. It was an experience that truly set me on the path to success.”

The event underscored the strong relationship between Borders College and the British Army, highlighting the many career pathways available to students. It also served as an inspiring reminder of how education and training can open doors to extraordinary opportunities, as demonstrated by Megan Reid’s remarkable journey from college student to soldier and Commonwealth athlete.

Borders College remains committed to providing students with unique learning experiences that prepare them for various careers, including those in the armed forces. Events like this continue to strengthen the college’s dedication to offering practical and career-focused education that empowers students to achieve their goals.
