Borders College celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2024 and highlighted the achievements of former students who have made their mark. One such success story is Jan Young, now Managing Director at Barrie Knitwear in Hawick, whose career in textiles spans over four decades.

Jan credits Borders College for laying the foundation for her success. She began her studies in the 1980s and early 1990s, completing HNDs in Textiles and Business. While working at Lyle and Scott in the late 1990s, she furthered her education at Northumberland University, earning a CIPD degree.

Reflecting on her journey, Jan said:

“Borders College was the start of my educational journey. It helped me develop professionally while balancing work and family life. My qualifications opened doors to various roles across different businesses.”

Before her current leadership role, Jan worked as an HR Manager and Business Partner at General Mills and as an HR Manager at Barrie Knitwear. With expertise in Human Resources, Employee Relations, and Talent Management, she brings valuable insights to Scotland’s textiles industry.

Jan is passionate about the revival of textiles in the Scottish Borders. She encourages aspiring professionals to explore diverse career paths, from technical and handcraft roles to business functions like finance, procurement, and sustainability.

On career development, Jan advises:

“Find a good mentor and build self-awareness. Mistakes will happen, but every experience shapes your path. Take responsibility for your journey, and opportunities will follow.”

Her story is a testament to lifelong learning, adaptability, and the lasting impact of a strong educational foundation.
