This course offers a variety of Level 6 subjects relevant to careers in health and social care, including nursing and social work. It covers a range of care-based topics designed to enhance knowledge across different care settings. Core skills are integrated throughout the programme.

The award includes national units at the Higher level. The subjects in the care field include:

  • Stress and Stress Management
  • Caring for People with Dementia
  • Social Services in Scotland
  • Leadership in Practice
  • Academic Study Skills
  • Understanding Mental Health and Mental Illness

    Social Services at SCQF Level 6

    Delivery

    Full-time 36 week course, 3 days per week in College / online, 1 day per week on placement.

    Entry requirements

    SCQF Level 5 Health and Social Care or a minimum of 4 National 5 awards to include English. Applicants may be required to complete a preparatory course as a condition of being placed on this course. Students will also be required to complete a PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) form. Applicants should be able to demonstrate values and principles relevant to working in care, such as kindness and empathy.

    Progression opportunities

    The course is suitable for applicants who wish to go directly into employment in the social care or community care field, e.g. Support Workers, Care Assistants. It is particularly relevant to the needs of adult returners and students who wish to progress to the HNC in Social Services.
