DFN Project SEARCH is a one-year internship programme, based on an international model which originated in the Cincinnati Children's Hospital in the USA, supporting young people with additional barriers to employment, this programme offers students with additional needs the opportunity to develop employability skills through internships working with a host employer. Students will work 4 days a week on rotation and experience 3 different rotations throughout the course.
There will also be some classroom learning activities 1 day per week at Borders college. This will include employability skills, team-building skills and citizenship. You will be given specific on-the-job training for the jobs on your rotation. A College tutor and a supported employment job coach will be in the host organisation to support you throughout the 36 weeks.
You will work towards a qualification, DFN Project SEARCH course work and SQA units. DFN Project SEARCH is provided by Borders College working in partnership with Scottish Borders Council and NHS Borders. All candidates must meet the ESF eligibility criteria prior to starting the course. Delivery
Full-time 36 weeks.
Students are based within a host employer organisation and will be supported by a College tutor and a Supported Employment job coach throughout the 36 weeks.
Project Search Week:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are rotation days where the interns will be in a work-based environment to develop employability skills, knowledge and experience. This will be supported by an Employment support job coach.
Initial rotations we offer are within host business NHS Borders. These roles may be with in the Laundry department, Radiology, Catering and Administration. There will also be opportunity to complete external rotations outside of the NHS.
Wednesday interns will be at Borders College working through the DFN Project Search Curriculum alongside independence and employable skills. This will be delivered by a Borders College tutor.

Entry requirements
There are no formal academic entry requirements:
- From the age 16-29 with additional needs.
Independent traveller. - Willingness to work toward securing full time employment.
- Willing to have mandatory vaccinations- HEP B etc.
Maintain high levels of attendance. - Attend DFN Project Search assessment/interview days prior to being offered a place.
Successful applicants will be invited to a DFN Project Search assessment day where they will be assessed on suitability, skills, personal care.
Progression opportunities
This creates real opportunities for employment. A high percentage of students who complete this course achieve permanent paid employment.
Continued support will be provided by Employment support during and after the search for employment.
Interns must be willing to engage with Employment support and continue job searching and employment meetings.
