This National Certificate (NC) Childhood Practice provides a comprehensive course on a range of topics, both theory and work practice-related, that will aid you in developing and enhancing the knowledge, skills, values and competencies for those wishing to work with, or already working with, children and young people in a childhood practice setting.

Learners will be given opportunities to explore child development, advocate for children's rights, design effective play activities, and foster an inclusive curriculum. They will also have the chance to deepen their understanding of the roles of professionals and services that support children and families, enhancing their personal growth.

Additionally, there will be hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to complete a work placement in a relevant setting.

Qualifications

Early Education and Childcare at SCQF Level 6

Delivery

Full-time 36 week course, 2 days per week in College and 2 days per week on placement.

The course is taught using a varierty of learning and teaching methods. The Level 6 comprises of lectures, group work, practical sessions, on-line resource self study and is delivered by vastly experienced professionals.

Entry requirements

To be considered for this course applicants should have a minimum of four National 5 qualifications at C leve; or above (or equivalent) including English or Communication and/or be progressing from our Childhood Practice Level 5 college course or School College Partnership National 5 course. Ideally, applicants should have some experience working with children. If you do not meet the formal entry requirements but are a mature applicant with significant experience working with children you are welcome to apply and we will assess this on an individual basis. Additional Selection Requirments: The interview process may include a one-on-one interview, an extended written task and a reference.PVG Scheme Membership is mandatory for placement.Due to the high volume of applications, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview. A well-crafted personal statement will support your application.If English is not your first language, you should have a minimum of SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses, and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

Progression opportunities

Possible progression to study HNC Childhood Practice, attend University or enter employment in roles such as Nursery Assistant, Playgroup Assistant and Classroom Assistant. The course allows registration with the SSSC (Scottish Social Services Council) as an Early Years Support Worker.

Methods of Assessments: Written assignments, Presentations, Portfolios, closed and open book assessments and practical experieinces on placement.

This course has a mandatory workplacement that must be achieved in a childcare setting. Placement will be for approximately 30 days throughout the course. Placement will be 1-2 days a week.
